An academic with extensive private and public sector experience, Gilles Patry specializes in modelling, simulation and control of environmental systems in general and of wastewater treatment plants in particular.  His research led to the development of GPS-X™, a modular multi-purpose modeling system for the simulation of wastewater treatment plant dynamics. GPS-X™ is one of the most advanced software modelling tool for the simulation of wastewater treatment plant dynamics.  GPS-X™ is being marketed by Hydromantis, Inc.

Dr. Patry was President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ottawa from 2001 to 2008. He was Vice-President (Academic) from 1997 to 2001 and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 1993 to 1997.  He holds a B.A.Sc. and M.A.Sc. from the University of Ottawa and a Ph.D. from the University of California @ Davis in Civil Engineering.  Prior to joining the University of Ottawa, Dr. Patry was a consultant in water resources and environmental engineering (1971-1978), professor of Civil Engineering at École Polytechnique de Montréal (1978-83) and at McMaster University (1983-93) in Hamilton, Ontario.

In April 2010, Dr. Patry was appointed President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation effective August 1, 2010. The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.

Between October 2017 and April 2022, Dr. Patry was Executive Director of the U15 – The Group of Canadian Research Intensive Universities.  The U15 fosters the development and delivery of long-term, sustainable higher education and research policy, in Canada and around the world.
